In September 2004, SERA moved to our new office space located at the southeast corner of NW 5th & Flanders in the former Minnesota Hotel. In November 2006, SERA expanded our office to the second floor, nearly double the size of our downtown office space with an 8,450 square foot expansion. Our new office incorporates sustainable design elements at every level, including an adaptive reuse of the existing space, recycled construction materials, reuse of existing materials such as wood columns and brick, daylighting, occupancy sensors, EnergyStar appliances, and low flow toilets and faucets. SERA’s office is a logical step toward practicing sustainability in our daily lives.
To increase daylight and to make a meaningful connection to the streetscape and proposed transit mall on 5th Avenue, the existing storefront was replaced with 8’10” glass panels that extend from the sill to the transom, with added transom windows above. The new windows demonstrate the benefits of natural day lighting: increased productivity and enhanced livability, while also saving energy. Passersby are able to actively engage with the activity going on at SERA.
SERA’s new space has the look and feel of a studio loft, giving it a work-in-progress persona even though it has been programmed for maximum use and efficiency. All work stations are arranged perpendicular to the main window/front porch so everyone has visual contact to the street and daylight. The design responds to SERA’s dynamic team approach that matches talent to the project. Meeting rooms overflow into work areas, allowing for small impromptu meetings of employees and clients, creating a watercooler effect.
SERA’s office first floor received LEED-CI (Pilot) Gold certification in April 2006. The second floor was certified LEED-CI Platinum in January 2010.
