In its early twentieth-century heyday, Centennial Mills helped drive the development of what would become Portland’s River District. In the early twenty-first century, a derelict Centennial Mills is poised to become the pinnacle of a rejuvenated and burgeoning River District. This important and historic riverfront site demands a creative, unifying vision that exceeds the public’s aspirations—one that recreates Centennials Mills as a compelling part of Portland and its future. SERA Architects was hired by the Portland Development Commission (PDC) to draft a framework plan to clarify the public’s desires and expectations for the site. Adopted by City Council in the Fall of 2006, the plan is being used by PDC to help guide the redevelopment of the waterfront.
