Northwood

Northwood is a 57-unit transit-oriented development in Portland’s historic Kenton neighborhood. In addition to a mix of studios, one- and two-bedrooms, and live/work units, the building offers ground-floor retail to create an active and vibrant street edge. Tuck-under parking, ample bicycle storage, and adjacent light-rail support multiple transit methods for residents.

Located inside a historic conservation overlay district, it was important that the design fits into the neighborhood context and supports the growth of this unique area. As such, the exterior design features a stucco system with venting at the roof to maintain a clean look, with inset single-hung windows, a simple color palette, and natural wood accents. Inside, the lobby design reflects the neighborhood’s icons, with plaid-inspired carpeting that references the nearby Paul Bunyan statue and a mural that features North Portland’s history and heroes.

Northwood achieved high level of sustainability through low-flow fixtures, Energy Star appliances, efficient lighting, flow-through planters for stormwater management, solar power photovoltaic panels, and an efficient envelope and insulation system.
