SERA was hired to provide Western Oregon University with a new master plan that would build upon its recent enrollment growth as WOU prepares to double the size of its student body over the next ten years. The design team collaborated with the University Steering Committee to answer the question “What will WOU look like in 2020?” Using a back-casting strategy, the design team helped WOU look at itself in a new way and visualize a compact campus that retains the beauty and effectiveness of WOU today while supporting a student body twice its current size.
The new master plan two major goals of the University: 1) a flexible framework that guides long-range decision making for undeveloped areas and 2) an infill plan for the heart of the existing campus. The Western Oregon University Master Plan was adopted by the City of Monmouth in June, 2011. SERA assisted the University with the approvals process.
