Hyatt Centric Named Best in Hotels by IIDA Oregon

Last week, the IIDA Oregon chapter awarded the Hyatt Centric Portland top honors by naming it the Best in Hotels at the 2020 Design Excellence Awards celebration!

Held virtually this year, the event recognized projects and professionals enhancing interior design across the state.

SERA designed the Hyatt Centric Portland to recall the region’s deep history of craft, cherished natural wonders and celebration of local culture.

“The reason we thought this one was fantastic was really because it was quite clever and whimsical at the same time, with the use of lighting, and use of the [tent] substructure in the lobby space,” said Meena Krenek, juror and award-winning designer at Perkins+Will. She added that the design team “really [made] the spaces feel like you’re always discovering something in your experience in the hotel.”

With a call to exploration, adventure and discovery, the public spaces in Hyatt Centric Portland pique interest with obscured views into different seating areas, and the use of light and color to highlight pathways and areas of activity. Like the exterior façade, the dynamic plays of light throughout the lobby are constantly changing, always inviting the guest to come back and create new experiences. The restaurant Masia takes it concept from the lodestone — a bit of magnetized rock that sits at the core of a compass, enabling discovery, exploration and ultimately connection. And guest levels recall the idea of a nest, with subtle curves in furniture, woven materials in wood and metal, spherical light fixtures, and strategic placement of color — all promoting the serene sense of looking out at the edge of a warm, safe place.
